Sprouts Farmers Market met its goal of opening 30 new stores in 2023 and plans to maintain that momentum as it heads into the new year and beyond.

As Sprouts expanded rapidly this year, it also entered less familiar markets, relying entirely on itsnew small-format storesfirst detailed in 2020 — all part of its revised expansion plan.

The specialty grocer unveiled its revised growth strategy four years ago, aiming to focus on two target customer groups: health enthusiasts and discerning shoppers, Sprouts Chief Strategy Officer David McGlinchey said in an interview. Building on that, Sprouts developed a real estate strategy to open stores in areas where target consumers live, with locations within 250 miles of an operating or planned distribution center.

"This allows us to build density in existing markets," he noted. "We have a lot of stores in California, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, and elsewhere."

California is home to nearly 140 Sprouts stores, andmore are planned for early 2024, the grocer has begun promoting on its website. Arizona, its home state, is approaching 50 stores after opening two new locations in 2023.

However, Sprouts does not intend to expand only in these Western U.S. markets.

In 2022, Florida was the only East Coast state where Sprouts expanded further. The six stores opened that year were the most among all states in its expansion plan.

This year, Sprouts placed greater emphasis on the East Coast, opening a total of 12 new stores across Florida, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Virginia.

The grocer opened 12 stores on the East Coast in 2023, including its second locations in New Jersey and Virginia.

"We have a lot of white space across the country to build stores," McGlinchey said, adding that Sprouts will continue to push into East Coast markets as it did in 2023.

Pushing into the Sunshine State

As Sprouts expanded on the East Coast this year, it showed particular interest in Florida.

The state not only gained nine new stores in 2023, but also hosted the Sprouts mobile truck, which brought signature products along with music, activities, and giveaways at more than 50 stops during its 12-week tour.

Florida footprint grows

Sprouts added multiple stores in the southeastern state, aiming to capitalize on its growing population.

The specialty grocer is not the only one eyeing Florida, a region that has been a hotbed of grocery growth. FromAldi and Winn-DixieandKroger and Albertsonsproposed mergers, toPublix's continued dominance in the state, Florida's grocery landscape is full of competing chains and compelling storylines.

But Sprouts is not worried: "Our CEO always says we really don't have competitors in Florida, and for the most part, that's fairly true," McGlinchey said.

"I think when people want fresh food and want to follow a certain lifestyle, they come to us, and then they go elsewhere (like Kroger and Publix) for all the staples to fulfill their full shopping needs," he added.

McGlinchey said Sprouts did not exist in Florida six years ago. But now, the state is one of Sprouts' most store-dense states, even approaching Arizona's store count, and has a distribution center in Orlando, leaving room for further growth.

McGlinchey added that the Sunshine State also has a mix of younger and older populations, which aligns with Sprouts' product assortment.

"From California to the New York island"

McGlinchey said that when Sprouts revised its expansion strategy a few years ago, it set a 10% growth path, and except for setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the specialty grocer plans to continue along that trajectory in the coming years.

McGlinchey said Sprouts plans to open 35 new stores in 2024 in both new and existing markets, and expects to exceed that target.

McGlinchey noted that while opening new stores on the West Coast is almost just a matter of selecting a site and opening the doors, East Coast expansion is more challenging.

"In places like Florida or New Jersey, we're just starting to build, people aren't familiar with the brand, and we have to work very hard," McGlinchey said.

The specialty grocer continues to work on educating customers about what Sprouts is and what it offers — such as sending the mobile truck to tour Florida, McGlinchey added.

Sprouts Farmers Market's U.S. footprint

Sprouts' early growth was concentrated on the West Coast, but it has gradually moved east in recent years.

In addition to finding markets where its target consumers are, Sprouts also seeks areas suitable for its 20,000 to 25,000 square foot small-format stores, a format the grocer is fully focused on in its expansion.

"There are nearly 100 stores in the pipeline right now. All 100 will be in the new format," McGlinchey said.

McGlinchey said Sprouts can either move into existing retail spaces or build new stores, adding that new builds are easier but less favorable in terms of timing.

"Unlike the Northeast, Florida has a lot of new construction because there's a lot of land being developed," he said, further indicating Sprouts' room for growth in the state.

To prepare for entering newer markets further east, Sprouts is working on new distribution centers. The grocer recently closed its Atlanta facility but plans to open a Mid-Atlantic center and will begin looking for another distribution center location in a southeastern U.S. city, McGlinchey said.

In the coming years, as the grocer continues to build new stores, McGlinchey pointed to the Northeast and Midwest as markets Sprouts has already targeted.
