Quick Overview

  • Albertsons and Chevron U.S.A. Inc. have begun allowing shoppers to combine fuel rewards earned in both companies' loyalty programs for discounts at stations selling the Chevron brand.
  • Under the arrangement announced by the parties on Wednesday, shoppers who link their Albertsons and Chevron Texaco loyalty accounts can use rewards from both programs toward the same fuel purchase at participating Chevron and Texaco stations.
  • The integration builds on a partnership between the companies dating to 2012, when some Chevron and Texaco stations in California began offering gasoline discounts to shoppers at Vons and Pavilions.

In-Depth Analysis

The new program allows Albertsons shoppers to obtain larger fuel discounts by combining points earned from shopping with rewards accumulated in the Chevron Texaco rewards program.

At Chevron and Texaco stations outside California and Hawaii, Albertsons loyalty program members can save up to $1 per gallon (by redeeming Albertsons for U points), while also saving an additional 50 cents per gallon through the Chevron program, for a combined maximum savings of $1.50 per gallon. In those two states, the savings cap for the Albertsons program is 20 cents per gallon, but customers can still save up to 50 cents per gallon through the Chevron Texaco rewards program, for a combined maximum savings of 70 cents per gallon.

Customers can apply eligible savings from the Albertsons rewards program to up to 25 gallons of gasoline for one vehicle per transaction. Under the program, 100 points can be redeemed for a discount of 10 cents per gallon.

Albertsons noted that while shoppers can redeem fuel rewards earned from shopping at Chevron and Texaco stations, they cannot use rewards from the Chevron Texaco rewards program at Safeway fuel stations. Additionally, fuel rewards are not available in the Jewel-Osco market area, which covers Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa.

Albertsons and Chevron are both sponsors of the Albertsons Boise Open golf tournament, which was held in early August at a country club in Boise, Idaho, where Albertsons is headquartered.

Last year, Albertsons added a benefit to its loyalty program allowing members to save on travel spending. Under that arrangement, shoppers could receive up to 5% cash back on hotel stays, activities, packages, and ground transportation costs, as well as 1% cash back on airfare. Members of the retailer's paid loyalty tier, FreshPass, received double the standard cash back rates through that program.
